I recently had a student contact me who was PISSED about the library. Apparently he had just ordered the text book for his class (we are three weeks into the semester…), but it did not arrive before the next class meeting. So, a full 30 minutes (THIRTY WHOLE MINUTES) before his class, he went to the library to check out the textbook so he could do the reading. He misplaced his ID months ago, and was SHOCKED to learn that he would not be allowed to check out a textbook without it.
Naturally, he took his outrage directly to the University President because HOW DARE THEY. Dude. For one, trying to take care of this with only 30 minutes before your class already tells me that you were not seriously committed to preparing for your class. What if the book was already checked out? Also, that 30 minutes included the 10 minutes he would need to walk to class. Twenty minutes is not nearly enough time.
Also, all libraries require some sort of specific card to check out a book. Period. Our library requires that they swipe the student ID to ensure that it is an actual student checking out the book and to connect to the student account in the event the book is not returned. That is it. You either have the student ID or you do not. Regardless, he was not pleased with these “Nazi Germany rules” and I could look forward to “hearing from the media.”
Sean Penn is saying idiotic words again. I truly struggle to follow him most of the time because, like Sarah Palin, he’s a big fan of a word salad: “I’m very suspicious of a movement that gets glommed onto, in great stridency and rage, and without nuance. And even when people try to discuss it in a nuanced way, the nuance itself is attacked … It’s too black and white. In most things that are very important, it’s really good to just slow down.”
I think my tombstone should read “Here lies Cely in great stridency and rage.”
To end on a super upsetting and incredibly depressing news that surprises no one, “Our System Is Too Broken to Assess the Sexual Assault Claim Against Kavanaugh.”
I truly do not understand why young men shouldn’t be held accountable or responsible for their actions when they are young (they just don’t know any better!), yet pregnant teenage girls should be held RESPONSIBLE FOREVER for that situation.
