Oh baby, it’s cold outside…and we know just what to do about it! Who’s ready for these dark rum hot toddy’s? (waves hands frantically) The hot toddy is a drink traditionally prepared with liquor (usually whiskey), honey, herbs, and spices. It’s served warm, which makes it ideal for these cooler winter months. I’m not really a fan of whiskey, and so went with a dark rum.
I whipped up some green tea to complement the drink. Aside from keeping you hydrated, green tea leaves contain flavanoids, which have anti-inflammatory activity in the body. They are also high in anti-oxidant activity, which may neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals. Tea has been proven to display positive effects on normalizing blood pressure, and plays a role in the prevention of heart disease and diabetes, by reducing blood glucose activity. We did a whole post about the wonderful benefits of tea here!
Anyways, now that you know why we love tea, we can move onto the other ingredients used. Which is really just honey and lemon. Yep, this cocktail is as basic as they come. Let’s get started shall we? In a pot, bring the water to a boil. Turn off the heat and add the tea bag to the pot. Allow to steep for 5 minutes In your serving glass, add the dark rum, lemon juice, and the tea water. Stir in the honey. Start with 2 teaspoons, and if you like things a little sweeter, add the last teaspoon.
That’s it! Enjoy this comforting cocktail in the comfort of your home. You can also make a bigger batch to share with loved ones. Keep in mind the reccs for alcohol consumption…we don’t want you passing out from too many hot toddys. 1 serving of alcohol for women, 2 servings for men…per day (which doesn’t at all mean you need to drink every day!) And remember…don’t drink and drive 😉
